The short answer

For most straightforward cases, you can go from booking to a signed cert in your inbox on the same day, often within a couple of hours.

That is a big change from the traditional route, where you might wait days for a free appointment, then spend an hour travelling and sitting in a waiting room.

Breaking down the timeline

The process has three parts, and each one takes less time than people expect.

Booking: a few minutes. You fill in a short form with your details, your symptoms, and how many days you think you need. Many online GP services offer same-day slots, and some let you request a cert without a scheduled appointment at all.

The consultation: 5 to 15 minutes. This can be a video call, a phone call, or in some cases a detailed online questionnaire reviewed by a doctor. Common illnesses do not need long. The doctor asks about your symptoms, how long you have had them, and what kind of work you do.

The cert itself: usually within a few hours. Once the doctor approves it, the cert is signed and emailed to you as a PDF. If you consult in the morning, you will usually have it before lunch.

What can slow things down

Not every request moves at the same pace. A few things add time:

  • Busy periods. Monday mornings and flu season are the two busiest windows for every GP service in the country, online or otherwise.
  • Incomplete information. If your form is vague, the doctor may need to come back with questions. Being specific first time round saves a round trip.
  • Complex symptoms. If your case needs more than a quick assessment, the doctor will take longer, or refer you for an in-person examination. That is the right call, even if it is not the fast one.
  • Longer certs. A cert for two weeks off usually gets more scrutiny than one for two days.

What about weekends and evenings?

This is where online services genuinely pull ahead. Many operate outside standard surgery hours, including evenings and weekends, so a Saturday stomach bug does not have to wait until Monday.

Availability varies by provider, so check the hours before you assume someone is on the other end at 11pm.

How to get your cert as fast as possible

A few small things make a real difference:

  1. Apply early in the day. Requests submitted in the morning are almost always turned around faster than ones sent at 6pm.
  2. Be specific. "Vomiting since 2am, unable to keep fluids down" is far more useful than "feeling unwell".
  3. Mention your job. A warehouse worker and a remote software developer need different recovery times, and the doctor needs to know which one you are.
  4. Check your spam folder. Certs arrive by email, and automated messages sometimes land in the wrong place.
  5. Have your details ready. Full name, date of birth, address, and your employer's requirements if they have any specific format.

One honest note

Fast does not mean automatic. A doctor still has to assess you and decide whether a cert is appropriate. If it is not, you will not get one, no matter how quickly you applied.
